Rafter Repair

Today I replaced a rafter with a crack in it.

I didn’t notice this crack when putting the rafter up because it’s not visible from the other side.

I noticed the crack while adding additional blocking between the rafters at the top plate.

The additional blocking closes up the rafter bays and provides additional stiffness.

Replacing the rafter was a little tricky since I’d already put the cross bracing on, but it just barely worked out.

While hammering the last nail, I hammered my thumb. It cut the skin that was caught between my thumbnail and the hammer.
